Dungarvan Observer, October 2000
In Galway recently, plans for an incinerator and a superdump were rejected by the local
councillors. Galwegians say that they love their city and countryside and do not want it
damaged. This gives rise to the obvious question - what is Galway supposed to do with its
waste? It is this writer's view that, as a result of this vote, local authorities there
will be forced to lead the way in Ireland in arriving at sustainable waste management
strategies. A number of groups and communities have come up with a strategy and a pilot
project which aims to dramatically reducing the need for waste going to landfill and
incineration. Details of this strategy can be found at http://communities.msn.com/RecycleforGalway
Maybe community groups in West Waterford can come together and set up a similar type project?
