Comment
As many of you are aware, a serious problem has arisen in Galway city where there is no means of disposing of commercial rubbish.
Local city and county councillors have are being blamed for this sorry mess because they are said to have rejected a regional waste management plan. This is untrue and is unfair to the local politicians. The truth is that they welcome that portion of the plan, which aims to minimise the waste produced, and dispose of the remainder in a manner which minimises the damage to the environment. The local politicians want this plan to start immediately, as this would greatly reduce the problem of waste disposal in a very short space of time. All this at a minute fraction of the cost of an incinerator. Instead, they have been told that as far as the plan goes it is a case of 'all or nothing'.
A Superdump or an Incinerator is portrayed by some as being the solution to the waste problem in Galway. It should be noted that the lead-time for these options is 4-6 years, by which time the mound of plastic bags lining the streets of Galway will quite substantial if these two options really are the only solutions!
