FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Here are a few words of wisdom that the Dalai Lama had to say about the millennium.
All it takes is a few seconds to read and think about.

1. When you lose, don’t lose the lesson.

2. Be gentle with the earth.

Comment

The Lickey Concern Group are delighted to see that Waterford County Council have followed the Lickey Concern Group’s lead in spreading information on environmental protection through the use of local newspapers. One of the biggest problems with waste management (along with lack of facilities) is lack of available information, education and incentives. Many groups, communities and councillors are constantly pressurising our local authorities to do more to protect our environment and demand clean water and clean air.

Recent announcements regarding Waterford County Council recycling initiatives are to be welcomed. However, much more must be done to reduce the amount of scarce resources that are being committed to landfill. Waterford County Council recycling initiatives on their own will not have much impact on the waste mountains being generated by our society. It should be noted that these recycling initiatives apply to municipal waste, and municipal waste makes up less than 16% of all waste that goes to landfill. Assuming that these initiatives are successful, the amount of waste that we will be dumping will still have increased by over 10% within a year. Only when pressure is brought to bear on the producers of the other 84% of waste going to landfill (e.g. the building industries and manufacturing industries) can we hope to see an improvement in our waste management problems.
